Sleeping over moral dilemmas modulates utilitarian decision-making

چکیده
Abstract Moral decision-making depends on the interaction between emotional and cognitive control processes, which are also affected by sleep. Here we aimed to assess potential role of sleep in modulation moral decisions over time testing change behavioral responses dilemmas (1 week). Thirty-five young adults were tested twice, with one week sessions. In each session, participants presented 24 sacrificial (12 Footbridge- 12 Trolley-type) 6 everyday-type dilemmas. dilemmas, had choose whether or not kill person save more people (utilitarian choice), judge how morally acceptable proposed solution was, they felt terms valence arousal during decision. decide pursuit violations involving dishonest behavior. Between sessions, participants’ pattern was assessed via actigraphy. We observed that reduced utilitarian choices second this effect pronounced for Trolley-type showed after a judged as less acceptable, but there no self-reported reactivity (i.e., valence, arousal). Moreover, efficiency mildly negatively associated changes decision acceptability Footbridge-type Taken together, our data suggest dealing situation engages several interacting factors seem go beyond competing roles processes.

Moral dilemmas in females: children are more utilitarian than adults
Influential theories on moral judgments propose that they rely either on emotions or on innate moral principles. In contrast, the mental model theory postulates that moral judgments rely on reasoning, either intuition or deliberation. The theory allows for the possibility that intuitions lead to utilitarian judgments. This paper reports two experiments involving fifth-grade children, adolescent...
متن کاملMoral dilemmas in cognitive neuroscience of moral decision-making: a principled review.
Moral dilemma tasks have been a much appreciated experimental paradigm in empirical studies on moral cognition for decades and have, more recently, also become a preferred paradigm in the field of cognitive neuroscience of moral decision-making. Yet, studies using moral dilemmas suffer from two main shortcomings: they lack methodological homogeneity which impedes reliable comparisons of results...

Research on moral dilemma judgments has been fundamentally shaped by the distinction between utilitarianism and deontology. According to the principle of utilitarianism, the moral status of behavioral options depends on their consequences; the principle of deontology states that the moral status of behavioral options depends on their consistency with moral norms. To identify the processes under...
متن کاملDeontological and utilitarian inclinations in moral decision making: a process dissociation approach.
Dual-process theories of moral judgment suggest that responses to moral dilemmas are guided by two moral principles: the principle of deontology states that the morality of an action depends on the intrinsic nature of the action (e.g., harming others is wrong regardless of its consequences); the principle of utilitarianism implies that the morality of an action is determined by its consequences...
متن کاملWhen killing the heavy man seems right. Making people utilitarian by simply adding options to moral dilemmas
Trolley dilemmas are widely used to elicit moral intuitions. Most people do not think it would be morally right to push a heavy man from a bridge, thereby killing him, in order to avoid the death of several other people. Here we empirically tested a prediction by Unger (1996) who claims that adding more options to this scenario would shift people’s intuition from the normally preferred option o...
